Have you ever seen those amazing sparkler photos and wondered how to get shots like those? ME TOO! This summer I vowed to practice until I got them, luckily for me it only took on shot!! I know when I first started out, my sparkler shots looked pretty similar to big blurry balls of light. Unfortunate to say the least. BUT if you want to take some pretty stellar shots this fourth of july, get ready to learn some tricks!!
First, make sure that you shot about 10 minute AFTER sunset. I promise you the lighting will be opportune! Make sure to position your subject facing the sunsetting, this will illuminate their face BUT since the sun has set, it won’t be super bright!!
Next, make sure your camera is in manual mode. It helps you control your setting better! My settings for the shots below were ISO 500, f/1.4, SS 1/200. I photographed these with my sigma 24!
Some tips:
Make sure the background is dark. It will make the sparklers pop more. If you need to adjust your setting, keep the SS higher! It will freeze the sparkler!
Focus on the hand holding the sparkler! it will be easier to set the focus point than trying to catch the sparks!
Use two sparklers at the same time for a bigger glow!
Obviously having super cute outfits helps a ton too!!! 🙂
Good luck and happy fourth of July ya’ll!!
